In 1973, the derby actually found itself immersed in scandal, as 14-year-old Jimmy Gronen was found to have a car with an electromagnet built into the nose, activated when Gronen leaned his helmet against the back of his seat. His wheels were also found to be chemically treated in a way that reduced the rolling resistance of the tire. Gronen’s uncle and legal guardian, wealthy engineer Robert Lange, was indicted for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and paid a $2,000 fine. (Courtesy of Jeff Lula.)
